In 1928 James Phelps received a contract to install all the tile work for the new Santa Barbara
Courthouse. Simultaneously, Phelps was constructing own personal residence, “Casa Andalusia”.
THE ARCHITECT: J. Joseph Plunkett
To design his home, Phelps hired one of Santa Barbara's most famous architects of the 1920s: Joseph Plunkett of Edwards, Plunkett & Howell. Members of this architectural team also designed the Arlington Theater that hosts the SB Film Festival, the El Encanto resort, the original Santa Barbara airport and some of the most fabulous 1920s mansions in Montecito.
